POSITION PURPOSE

Maintains command of assigned aircraft from the time it leaves the gate until arrival at the destination gate. Manages the safety of the passengers, crewmembers, cargo and aircraft.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Commands the aircraft and crew from departure gate to the destination gate.
  • Ensures the safety of the passengers, crewmembers, cargo, and aircraft.
  • Operates assigned flights after determining airworthiness of the aircraft and reviewing all current factors such as weather, field conditions, navigational aids, etc., relative to the safe operation of each flight.
  • Reviews the load manifest for accuracy.
  • Supervises en route performance of other crew members assigned to the aircraft.
  • Ensures compliance with all Company procedures and FAA regulations relative to the conduct of flights.
  • Advises the Dispatcher of any situation that could affect the flight schedule in a timely manner.
  • Contributes to a reliable and on-time operation by meeting all report times and minimum turn times.
  • Assists in the loading and unloading of the aircraft when such assistance will expedite the handling of the flight or speed up service to the passengers.
  • Utilizes every opportunity to provide experience and instructions to the First Officer in order to develop him/her in skill development.
  • Maintains attendance according to Company procedures and practices; adheres to the Company uniform dress code and observes the Rules of Conduct for all associates as outlined in the Associate Handbook.
  • Continues professional training towards upgrading performance and abilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability necessary to perform this job.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must meet the minimum requirements for an ATP or RATP certificate. ATP written is preferred.
  • Must have 2500 hours total time and 1000 hours total time in a Part 121 Operation.

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Prior customer service experience, preferably in an aviation environment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations. Able to effectively present information to and respond to questions from management, crew, passengers and the general public. Able to speak and be understood in English, including shouted verbal commands during emergency situations.

REASONING/PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Capable of interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be able to remain calm, think and react quickly in all types of emergency situations including but not limited to: medical emergencies, aircraft decompression, emergency evacuations, fires, security threats, passenger disturbances, turbulence, etc.

DECISION MAKING

Makes day to day decisions used to support strategic direction. Decisions often require some thought and are somewhat structured. Decisions could require additional expenditure of resources if not sound decisions. Able to process information quickly and react in a positive manner during unexpected and/or serious situations. Capable of controlling personal and emotional responses and acting appropriately under high levels of stress.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat and/or crawl.
  • Able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must possess the physical strength to reach and operate all emergency equipment and exits using necessary movements and force up to and including 70 pounds.
  • Capable of moving objects up to 40 pounds (flight bag)
  • Capable of lifting objects above shoulders up to and including 35 pounds (passenger carry-on luggage).
  • Able to adhere to the visual demands set in the medical standards established by the FAA.
  • Able to hear clearly verbal communications in person, on the telephone and over a headset with ambient aircraft and passenger noise.
  • Possess the stamina needed to work long days with frequent change in temperatures, climate and weather conditions.
  • Must be able to move about the aircraft and perform all required functions freely, effectively and quickly in confined environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an associate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • This position requires the ability to work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Withstand outdoor weather conditions within an open air hangar and on the flight line.
  • The noise level may be loud and use of headset is needed as required by policies and procedures. Willing and able to work extended duty periods on sequential days, as well as a varied schedule, including early morning, nights, overnights and weekends.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel up to 100% of the time, including nights, weekends, holidays and overnight travel. Able to work extended hours with lack of scheduling control and be ready to report to work on late notice. Willing to relocate based on the Company’s operational needs.
