Be sure to include a record of your military service according to these categories:

•  Separated or Retired: Include a copy of your latest DD-214 (member 2 or 4 only) for verification of veterans’ preference.

•  Retirees, O-4 or higher: Under section 5 of U.S.C. 2108, you are not included in the definition of preference eligible unless you are a disabled veteran. If you have a service-connected VA disability rating (even 0%), include a copy of your VA disability letter.

•  Active-duty: Provide an official “Statement of Service,” including name, date of birth, service branch, active duty service start and anticipated separation dates, and current pay grade. Also, list all decorations, medals, badges, citations, and/or campaign ribbons, awarded or authorized.
